About me
I’ve been a Missouri science educator for about 15 years. I want to use art to communicate the wonder, awe, and beauty of nature- that you can sometimes find in your own backyard! A lot of my work is based on observations I’ve made outdoors (mostly in Missouri) with my family or in science labs. I love small beauty and believe in the power of storytelling and "Notice and Wonder". With my art, I want to tell the story of a place and its ecological interactions. A butterfly might be drawn in various stages of development and placed with its host plant. A particular park or natural site (backyard included!) has a particular set of organisms I've observed there. In addition to these larger scale interactions, I am also interested in showcasing the beautiful structure and function of the minute details of a creature. As I draw a swallowtail, I am amazed by each dusty scale of color that allows that butterfly to be camouflaged, or easily noticed by a potential mate.
Right now, I house my works on Redbubble under the artist name Model Organism- the main reason being that I don't have startup funds to print my own items. I would love to partner with local shops and nonprofits to feature my designs, though.
A bit about my artistic process- I started creating watercolor art in 2021. At the end of 2022, I began experimenting with digital art using Sketchbook for iPad and Canva. I have always enjoyed photography, so I began repurposing my photos into digital art. I am self-taught in all artistic regards- I hope I continue to grow and learn as a science communicator and artist!
